    Owing to the Leeson effect, the oscillator turns the phase noise of its internal components into frequency noise, which results into a multiplication by 1/f2 in the phase-noise power spectral density. The Leeson effect is now extended to the analysis of amplitude noise and to the amplitude-phase coupling, introducing a theoretical framework for the analysis of other oscillators, like masers, lasers, and opto-electronic oscillators. This self-consistent report is resommanded as a complement to the book E. Rubiola, Phase Noise and Frequency Stability in Oscillators Cambridge University Press, paperback (2010) or hardback (2008).

    If a physical phenomenon can be measured with two independent instruments, the average cross-spectrum enables the rejection of the instrument background. This report describe the experimental method, discusses accuracy and bias for the most useful estimators, and reviews numerous applications in a variety of research fields.

    In the field of metrology, the term "primary" refers to a standard whose quantity value and measurement uncertainty are established without relation to another measurement standard for a quantity of the same kind; or to a procedure used to realize the definition of a measurement unit and obtain the quantity value and measurement uncertainty of a primary measurement standard. Accordingly, a phase and a normalized amplitude have to rely on ratio measurements.

    Smart use of mixers is a relevant issue in radio engineering and in instrumentation design, and of paramount importance in phase noise metrology. This tutorial differs from available documentation in that it also teaches a number of non-standard uses of the mixer, aiming to provide insight and wisdom.

    The measurement of the close-in AM noise of an oscillator shows specific problems, not solved with the bridge (interferometric) method because in this case a suitable reference is not available. The proposed schemes, which make use of commercial detectors in single-channel and correlation configuration, exhibit world-record sensitivity.
